how long is a JMW ceremony?

Allow about 20 mins, including time for paperwork before and after the ceremony itself.  Our ceremonies are short & sweet – that’s why they are called micro-weddings. The ceremony includes the legal elements plus just a little bit extra to mark the importance of the occasion, without over-doing it. We know many of our couples want the ceremony to be as simple as possible, so please don’t hesitate to let your celebrant know on the day that you want just the bare essentials. Alternatively, if you want to include your own personal vows, please do. You can even have someone give a short reading for you or say something on your behalf (max 5 mins).

do you perform same-sex weddings?

Absolutely. We have always been and will always be 100% supporters of marriage equality.

how many guests can I bring?

You are legally required to have two witnesses (over 18 years old). As long as they understand English, they can be anyone. Please let Just Married know in advance if you haven’t got anyone you can bring to be your witnesses. Including your witnesses, photographers and yourselves you can have up to a strict maximum of 20 people at your ceremony. We count children 5 years old and over in this number (kids 4 and under are welcome too, we just don’t include them in the 20). Please note though that the ceremony is brief and intimate and primarily for the couple and just a few guests. There are many reasons for this. Please note we can not make exceptions or allow extra guests, even for an additional fee.

what paperwork is required?

Under Australian Law you must complete the Notice of Intended Marriage form and give it to your celebrant at least one month before your wedding date. When you book with Just Married you will be emailed this form and detailed instructions on how to complete it. Just Married celebrants will look after all the paperwork (the processing and the costs) required to register your marriage under Australian Law. There are no additional fees to pay to us or Births Deaths and Marriages.

what happens on the day?

You just need to arrive before your ceremony time, to the pre-arranged ceremony location and meet your Just Married Weddings celebrant. The celebrant will look after everything. Your celebrant will conduct the ceremony, which will be a short and sweet, intimate and romantic ceremony. As part of the ceremony your celebrant will ask you to repeat the following words “I call upon all here present to witness that I [person 1] take you [person 2] to be my lawful wedded [husband/wife/spouse/partner in marriage]”. You will be given the opportunity to state your own personal vows if you like to. You will sign the necessary paperwork and your celebrant will declare you husband and wife/ spouse and spouse / husband and husband / wife and wife.

can I have more guests or a longer ceremony?

Just Married ceremonies are for couples who really want the bare essentials of a legal wedding, in a beautiful memorable location, and want to share it with just a small number of guests – like an elopement or a registry wedding. We can recommend celebrants for you to contact directly if you would rather a more traditional (in length and content) ceremony, or a larger guest list.

what if it rains?

All of the Just Married ceremony locations have a close-by undercover option. Please bring umbrellas too, especially if you have a large number of witnesses.

why can't I book sooner than 1 month away?

Under Australian Law you have to give at least one month notice of your intention to be married. This is a strict legal requirement.

why can't I book more than 18 months away?

Under Australian Law your NOIM is only valid for 18 months, but please contact us if you are planning a wedding more than 18 months away and we can still book you in – and do the paperwork when the 18 month mark rolls around.

can I get married if I am not Australian?

Anyone can get married in Australia with Just Married Weddings. You can fly in and fly out just for your wedding day and organize everything else online. No meetings or minimum stay requirement. Your passports are sufficient ID.

Only things to note are: you must both speak and understand English (or arrange a translator with us in advance). If you have been married before your divorce papers/ death certificates etc must be in English or officially translated. Just let us know in advance if you have documents in other languages.

If you have special requirements for a visa application please check this page.

the price is too good to be true?

Just Married Weddings certainly provides one of the most affordable ways to be married. It does not mean you will not be looked after. To the contrary. All your legal paperwork and planning is looked after in a streamlined, online, hassle-free way and you yourself will have a wonderful ceremony with a friendly, professional, very experienced celebrant.

The secret is, Just Married Weddings isn’t for everyone, but it is absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to avoid the fuss and extravagance of a typical wedding, or anyone who wants to elope, thinking of a Registry Marriage, having a secret wedding, an overseas celebration, a surprise wedding or absolutely anyone wanting to keep their ceremony intimate, all about them (not their guests, not their celebrant).

do you provide decorations / chairs etc? can we bring some?

No. The venues are all pretty stunning as is and our ceremonies are short and sweet elopement style ceremonies.

We do provide a small table and chairs and table flowers for signing the register.

We ask that you don’t bring chairs for guests (unless they are unable to stand for 20 minutes) or aisle carpets, arbours, etc. If an elaborate set up is what you are after it might be that Just Married Weddings isn’t for you.
